PDP Leadership Crisis Clouds 2027 Ambitions in Oyo as Aspirants Urged to Tread Carefully

Growing political conversations around the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State have brought renewed attention to the internal crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with observers warning that unresolved leadership disputes could significantly affect aspirants’ prospects.

Among those being projected by supporters is Segun Ogunwuyi, whose political trajectory has positioned him as a notable figure within the state’s power structure. Ogunwuyi served as a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly between 2011 and 2015 before representing his federal constituency in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019. He later worked as Executive Assistant on Investments to Governor Seyi Makinde and subsequently became Director-General of the Oyo State Investment and Public Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPA) from 2019 to 2021. He currently serves as Chief of Staff to the governor.

These appointments have made him a key participant in the Omituntun 1.0 and Omituntun 2.0 administrations, strengthening his influence within the Makinde political camp in Oyo State.

However, political analysts note that developments at the national level could prove decisive. The lingering leadership tussle within the PDP — involving factions aligned with Nyesom Wike and other party leaders — continues to trigger legal disputes and deepen uncertainty over control of the party’s authentic structure.

For aspirants preparing for future elections under the PDP platform, the unresolved crisis raises a crucial concern: which faction will ultimately determine candidate nominations and party direction? Until a clear resolution emerges, stakeholders believe prospective candidates may need to approach their ambitions with strategic caution.

Beyond party dynamics, Nigeria’s broader political environment also remains a major consideration. The growing influence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu across the national political landscape has reshaped alliances and power equations within several parties. Some analysts argue that opposition platforms may struggle to achieve full stability before the current political cycle runs its course.

In this context, while Ogunwuyi’s credentials and grassroots appeal may resonate strongly within Oyo State, his eventual political fortunes — like those of other aspirants — may depend not only on local strength but also on how the PDP resolves its internal leadership crisis at the national level.
