Qatar Gas Explosion: Nigerian Survivor Discharged As NiDCOM Praises Diplomatic Intervention

When a massive explosion rocked the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial zone late Sunday night, Nigerians thousands of miles away held their breath. Among the 66 workers injured in the blast was Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, a Nigerian national whose fate became a source of anxious waiting for family and officials alike.
Today, that wait is over. Abdulrahman has been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at accommodation provided by his employer, Qatar Energy, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) confirmed.
What Happened
The explosion occurred at approximately 10:30 PM local time on Sunday, 21 June 2026, at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility, one of Qatar’s critical energy installations. Qatar Energy, the state-owned operator, confirmed the incident was accidental — the result of an operational anomaly, not sabotage or hostile action.
The facility had only recently been brought back online after a planned shutdown that began in December 2025, raising early questions about whether restart procedures may have contributed to the incident. Qatar Energy has not yet disclosed the specific technical cause, but investigations are ongoing.
Emergency response teams from Qatar Energy and Qatar Civil Defence contained the fire swiftly, preventing what could have been a far more catastrophic outcome at the sprawling industrial complex.
The Human Toll
Sixty-six people sustained injuries of varying degrees, according to officials. None are in life-threatening condition. The injured include nationals from:

Diplomatic Intervention
As news of the explosion spread, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, moved immediately. His prompt engagement ensured that Abdulrahman’s case was tracked from the moment he was admitted, and that Nigerian authorities remained informed throughout the ordeal.
At a press conference in Doha on 22 June, Qatar Energy briefed diplomats and media, reiterating the accidental nature of the blast and assuring that all affected workers were receiving appropriate medical care.
NiDCOM Chairperson and CEO, Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed profound relief at Abdulrahman’s discharge and commended the ambassador’s unwavering oversight.
“We are glad that Jubril Abdulrahman is recovering and in safe hands,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “Our prayers are with him and with everyone still receiving treatment.”
Calls for Continued Support
Dabiri-Erewa urged Qatar Energy to sustain its support for all injured workers beyond the immediate emergency phase, emphasising that full recovery — physically and psychologically — requires long-term commitment.
“We call on the company to ensure that Abdulrahman and others affected continue to receive the full care they deserve throughout their recovery,” she said.
The Commission praised Ambassador Yakubu’s intervention as a model of consular diligence, noting that his swift action reflects the standard of protection Nigerians abroad should expect from their diplomatic missions.
What Happens Next
Qatar Energy has yet to release a full incident report. Industry observers and labour rights advocates will be watching closely to see whether systemic safety gaps are addressed, particularly at facilities undergoing restart after prolonged shutdowns.
For now, Abdulrahman is safe. But the explosion serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by the thousands of Nigerian workers in the Gulf region, and the importance of robust diplomatic support when things go wrong.
