By Rashidat Olushola Okunlade
Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative and Nigeria Customs Service have jointly commissioned a 60-bed reference hospital in Yelwa Tudu, Bauchi State, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery for security personnel and host communities.
The facility, named the Abdul Samad Rabiu Nigeria Customs Service Hospital, was initially conceived as a 30-bed hospital donated by ASR Africa but later upgraded to a 60-bed reference centre under the organisation’s Security Sector Support Grant (SSSG) Scheme in partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Assistant Comptroller General of Customs in charge of Bauchi Zone ‘D’, ACG CG Ogbonna, described the project as a landmark achievement in the Service’s history, noting that it reflects a deepened commitment to the welfare of officers and surrounding communities.
The Zonal Medical Director and Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Dr. Rimi Garba, disclosed that the hospital houses seven core clinical departments: obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and a medical laboratory. According to him, each unit is equipped to deliver high-quality medical services.
Managing Director/CEO of ASR Africa, Dr. Ubon Udoh, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to impactful interventions across healthcare, education, and social development. He emphasized that the partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service aligns with the vision of ASR Africa’s Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, who believes that sustainable development is anchored on a safe and secure environment.
Udoh added that the facility will serve not only Customs personnel but also members of the host community and other security agencies, while assuring continued engagement to ensure accountability, maintenance, and long-term sustainability.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, expressed gratitude to ASR Africa and its founder for what he described as the largest single donation ever received by the Service. He pledged that the facility would be properly maintained to meet the healthcare needs of personnel and the wider community.
In his goodwill message, community representative Hon. Tanko Dutse commended the initiative, noting that the hospital would significantly improve access to affordable healthcare for residents in the area.
The project highlights ASR Africa’s expanding footprint in Nigeria’s healthcare sector and underscores the importance of public-private collaboration in addressing critical infrastructure gaps.
The hospital is expected to ease pressure on existing health facilities in Bauchi State while improving access to essential medical services.
