LAWMA BEGINS CLEAN-UP OF IKATE ELEGUSHI

…calls on residents to shun indiscriminate waste disposal

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has embarked on a clean-up exercise of Ikate Elegushi and surroundings, with the aim of ridding the area of illegal structures, constituting serious environmental nuisance.

According to the Authority, the exercise was long overdue, as the structures had enabled poor sanitation, causing concern for the authorities.

LAWMA said that it would leave no stone unturned in its efforts to restore environmental sanity to all parts of the state, ridding localities of black spots, and introducing various waste management initiatives, and empowering PSP operators.

It called on residents to shun indiscriminate dumping of refuse, in gutters, road medians and canals, as the rainy season had returned, stressing that improper waste disposal worsened the problem of flooding and other environmental hazards. Residents were equally urged to desist from building structures on setbacks, medians and were advised to have proper waste management plan.

The Authority warned that defaulters, who continue to flout environmental laws of the State by dumping wastes at unauthorized locations, would be made to face the full wrath of the law, to deter others from endangering the safety of the generality of Lagosians.

It admonished residents to bag and containerize their wastes properly, for seamless evacuation by assigned PSP operators, mandated to service tenements in the state, at least once in a week.
