NANS Presidency: Opposition Thickens for Asefon over Alleged Link with Fayemi

One of the leading contenders for the Presidency of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Sunday Asefon, is currently battling his political life as he struggles to lead Nigerian students.

Investigation reveals that Asefon’s core followers have, in the last 24 hours, been battling to dispel the rumour that the Ekiti born student leader was given a huge sum of money by the Chairman of Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi to monetise the election.

Before the issue of being backed by Fayemi surfaced, Asefon, whose age is put between 39 and 42, is being criticized for being too old for the office.

Other aspirants to the exalted students’ office are; a former NANS Secretary, Momodu Muniru from UNILAG, Comrade Oladoja Olushola, Olaseinde Adeyinka Olaoluwa of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Famuyibo Olusegun (Captain), from University of Ibadan and many others.

Multiple sources within and outside the students circle reveal to our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday night that Fayemi is backing Asefon, a former Zone D Coordinator of NANS in his (Fayemi)’s desperate move to have the students populace under his control ahead the 2023 presidential election.

“I can confirm authoritatively that Governor Fayemi is leveraging on every opportunity to set agenda and prepare for 2023. He has seen the 2020 NANS Convention as another opportunity to extend his frontier.

Our concern is that Fayemi, who ordinarily should be championing the course of youths is positioning a 42 year old man for NANS presidency,” a delegate told AbujaCityJournal in confidence.

Believed to be aspiring for Nigerian Presidency in 2023, Fayemi was said to be bankrolling Asefon to buy delegates (SUG Presidents) at the convention and pocket the God fathers who usually run the show at NANS convention.

It would be recalled that Asefon led the Federation of Ekiti State Students Union (FESSU) in 2010 when Fayemi was Governor in his first term.

Meanwhile, the huge money deployed by Fayemi was reported to have been paid through his Abuja liaison office. A source at the convention ground has also revealed that the money is currently creating problem among the Ekiti contingents who want to have a share in the money.

Sensing that the real delegates, mostly from the North, South South and South East have made up their mind to vote for a generational shift, a source in Fayemi’s candidate camp said the candidate who is from Ekiti State gave each of the four zones in NANS 1million each and pocketed the balance of the N30million largesse.

Men of the DSS and officers of the Nigerian Police are currently at the convention ground at Old Parade Ground to ensure security of Lives and Properties at the venue are protected.

Meanwhile, some younger elements who are believed to be real students at the convention ground have said no condition would anyone more than 27 years old be allowed to win the ongoing presidential election.

According to the students, “enough is enough of the reign of career students in NANS”.

Addressing a Press conference today in Abuja, a group, League of Conscience Students, declared that they are ready to take their destiny into their hands.

Speaking on behalf of Zone A, C and B students, Abubakar Aliyu, Joseph Smith and Chidioke Smart respectively, said all Genrotocrats in NANS shall return home empty handed.

“We are putting it to the Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi that his Genrotocrat candidate will return home empty handed.

Fayemi is ready to ruin all that he claimed to represent because of his 2023 presidential ambition that is already in moribund.

“We have decided, and we have made up our mind. We are not going to allow Fayemi take us back to Egypt. We are ready to take our destiny into our hands.

“We are Davids but the posterity we are fighting for will triumph us above the goliath of Fayemi.

By the grace of God, we shall take back our organisation from the ghoghotas that have turned NANS to a Scope and Paspe Umbrella.

“The next President of NANS must not be more than 27. We won’t give room to those who uses NANS to empower themselves. All the past five presidents got married in office.

“They are non-students. We shall give them ENDSARS Treatment at the convention ground through the instrumentalities of our votes”, the students, said.
