The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on Nigerians, particularly religious leaders, to intensify prayers for peace, justice and wise leadership across the country.
The governor made the appeal during the State House 2026 Lailatul Qadr Prayer held on Monday evening at Lagos House Mosque in Ikeja. The event, themed “God-conscious living beyond Ramadan: A possibility or an illusion,” drew top government officials, Islamic scholars, Muslim faithful and members of the media.
Represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the spiritual significance of Laylat al-Qadr, describing it as a sacred period for reflection, forgiveness and renewal of commitment to societal values.
According to him, sincere prayers offered in humility can shape the destiny of individuals and nations, urging participants to seek divine guidance for Nigeria’s leadership and future democratic journey.
“As we approach another important juncture in our democratic journey, we must humbly ask Almighty Allah to grant peace across the land and guide those entrusted with leadership with wisdom and fairness,” he said.
The governor also commended the Muslim community for its continued prayers and contributions toward the development and moral strength of the state, noting that their devotion reinforces unity and shared values among citizens.
In her remarks, the First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, appealed to Nigerians to sustain the virtues of peace, unity and discipline cultivated during the Ramadan period. She urged citizens to remain prayerful and guard against actions capable of destabilising the nation.
Delivering the sermon, Guest Lecturer Sheikh AbdulHakeem Lawal of Ikhwanu Muslimoon, Lagos, charged Muslim faithful to maintain righteousness and spiritual discipline beyond the holy month. He observed that while many observe strict devotion during Ramadan, some revert to old habits after Eid, stressing the need for continuous self-reflection and moral conduct.
Special prayers were offered during the gathering for Nigeria’s leadership, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, as well as for the Lagos State Government, civil servants and citizens, and for global peace and stability.
