… VC says facility proved critical during Medical and Dental Council accreditation exercise
By Rashidat Okunlade | Lagos
The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) has donated a newly constructed Administrative Block worth N250 million to the College of Health Sciences at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS), Sokoto.
The intervention forms part of the ASR Africa Tertiary Education Grants Scheme and the Initiative’s commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure in tertiary institutions in Nigeria and across Africa. It represents an investment in the university’s capacity to support the effective delivery of its institutional responsibilities and contribute to the advancement of medical education in Nigeria.
The university officially took over the Administrative Block, named the Abdul Samad Rabiu Admin Block, during its official commissioning ceremony at the College of Health Sciences, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto.

‘A Historic Donation ‘
During his speech, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bashir Garba (MFR), described the donation of the admin block as historic and recognized the Chairman of ASR Africa, Abdul Samad Rabiu (CFR, CON), as a great philanthropist who has been impacting humanity over the years with the same gesture.
“I believe I am the most fortunate public servant because wherever I go as a public servant in the State to head an institution, I regularly encounter the impact of the donations by ASR Africa through its Chairman. This project being commissioned today is another testimony of such encounters as the Vice Chancellor of this great institution,” Prof. Garba said.
“I want to assure ASR Africa and its Chairman, represented here by the MD/CEO, Dr. Ubon Udoh, that we will make the best use of this edifice being commissioned today. This facility proved helpful when the university was seeking accreditation conducted by the Medical and Dental Council, as it complemented the university’s infrastructure critical to the accreditation exercise.”
One of 30 Grants to 30 Universities
The Managing Director/CEO of ASR Africa, Dr. Ubon Udoh, during his remarks stated:
“This project being commissioned today is one of the 30 grants to 30 universities in Nigeria. We are very proud to be associated with the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, as it scored very high in ASR Africa’s assessment process. As a university that has been a center of excellence, we look forward to greater partnerships that will continue to contribute positive impact to the university.”
Dr. Udoh added that the project reaffirms the commitment of the Chairman of ASR Africa, Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, to delivering sustainable, impact-driven programs across health, education, and social development sectors.

Facility Overview
The Abdul Samad Rabiu Admin Block comprises 20 staff offices, including the office of the departmental head, a panel room, staff conveniences, and storage facilities, which will provide dedicated and more convenient workspaces for teaching and research activities. It is located within the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) complex.
What To Know About ASR Africa
The brainchild of African industrialist, philanthropist, and Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) was established in 2021 to provide sustainable, impact-based, homegrown solutions to developmental issues affecting Health, Education, and Social Development within Africa.

Why It Matters
The donation of the N250 million administrative block to UDUS is a textbook example of how targeted philanthropy can solve immediate, structural problems in Nigeria’s educational system.
The Vice Chancellor’s revelation that the facility was critical to the university’s recent Medical and Dental Council accreditation is particularly significant. In Nigeria, accreditation exercises are notoriously rigorous, and the absence of adequate administrative infrastructure can lead to the loss of accreditation for medical programs, a devastating outcome for students and the healthcare system at large. By providing the facility before it was officially commissioned, ASR Africa effectively helped secure the future of medical education at UDUS.
Furthermore, the scale of ASR Africa’s intervention 30 grants to 30 universities demonstrates a systemic approach to educational development rather than isolated charity. By focusing on tertiary institutions, the Initiative is investing in the intellectual and infrastructural capacity that produces the doctors, engineers, and researchers Nigeria desperately needs.
However, the sustainability of such interventions requires university administrations to maintain these facilities with the same excellence with which they were built. Prof. Garba’s assurance to make the “best use” of the edifice is a commitment that will be tested over time. As Nigeria’s public universities continue to grapple with chronic underfunding, partnerships with private sector philanthropists like Abdul Samad Rabiu are not just helpful, they are essential for survival.
