Bakare-Oki’s Reforms Drive Digital Transformation of Traffic Management in Lagos
By Adebayo Taofiq Aribidesi
Lagos State’s complex traffic ecosystem, driven by its status as Nigeria’s commercial hub, continues to demand innovative and efficient management strategies to sustain the movement of people, goods and services across the metropolis.
At the centre of ongoing reforms is the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, whose leadership is reshaping traffic governance through a blend of technology, institutional reforms and inter-agency collaboration.
Upon assuming office, Bakare-Oki faced mounting challenges including increasing vehicular congestion, delayed emergency response times and growing public expectations. In response, he initiated a comprehensive reform agenda focused on modernization, professionalism and operational efficiency.
A key pillar of this transformation is the deployment of advanced digital systems to enhance real-time communication between traffic officers and command centres. This innovation has improved incident reporting, enabled faster response to road emergencies and strengthened traffic coordination across critical routes.
The adoption of data-driven tools has also enhanced planning and decision-making, allowing the agency to anticipate congestion patterns and strategically deploy personnel to high-traffic corridors.
In addition, LASTMA has strengthened its emergency response framework through the establishment of rapid-response units positioned across major routes. These units work in close coordination with agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Nigeria Police Force to ensure timely intervention during road incidents.
The collaboration has contributed to improved rescue operations, reduced secondary accidents and enhanced protection of lives and property.
Beyond technology and operations, Bakare-Oki has prioritised human capital development. Through structured training programmes and partnerships with relevant institutions, traffic officers are being equipped with skills in ethics, communication, digital literacy and conflict management.
This has led to improved professionalism and better public engagement, reinforcing trust between LASTMA and road users.
The agency has also intensified public enlightenment campaigns aimed at promoting responsible road use and encouraging voluntary compliance with traffic regulations.
These combined efforts have begun to yield measurable improvements, with more coordinated traffic flow and quicker response to incidents across Lagos.
As the state continues to expand, stakeholders say sustained reforms and innovation in traffic management will remain critical to supporting economic growth and urban mobility.
Bakare-Oki’s leadership at LASTMA is increasingly being recognised as a significant contribution to building a more responsive, technology-driven and efficient traffic management system in Lagos State.
