… Public servants to observe traditional festival as Sanwo-Olu reaffirms commitment to cultural heritage

The Lagos State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, as a work‑free day for all public servants in the state, in commemoration of this year’s Isese Day celebration.
The declaration is contained in Circular No. 057, issued by the state government and addressed to all senior officials, including the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Chief Judge, commissioners, local government chairmen, permanent secretaries, heads of parastatals, and chief medical directors.
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu approved the holiday “in reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition and preserving our heritage, while providing necessary support for traditional Institutions in the State,” the circular read.
Full Day Off, Resumption on Friday
The circular, signed by the appropriate authority, explicitly states that all Lagos State public servants are exempted from official duties on the said date.
“Consequently, official work will resume on Friday, 21st August, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. prompt.”
Accounting officers were directed to ensure full compliance and give the directive “the deserved Service‑wide publicity.”
Isese Day Gains Official Recognition
Isese Day, which celebrates the traditional Yoruba religion and cultural heritage, has gained increasing official recognition in recent years, particularly in Lagos and Ogun states. The festival features processions, traditional rites, and cultural displays by adherents and indigenous groups.
