LASTMA Arrests Truck Driver After 40-Foot Container Crushes Bus, Injures POS Operator In Lagos
Rashidat O. Okunlade Writes
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a major road accident involving a 40-foot containerised articulated truck that lost control and crashed into a commercial mini bus and roadside shops at Second Rainbow inward Oshodi.
The incident occurred along the service lane adjacent to the Police Tactical Team Station, causing panic among motorists, traders and residents within the area.
According to preliminary findings, the heavily loaded articulated truck reportedly suffered loss of control while in motion, causing the vehicle to overturn onto a commercial shuttle bus before crashing into nearby roadside business outlets.
The accident also left a female Point of Sale (POS) operator with severe leg injuries after the truck rammed into the commercial area where she operated under a roadside canopy.
Emergency responders and security operatives immediately rescued the injured woman and rushed her to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
LASTMA disclosed that its officials swiftly mobilised to the scene to manage traffic flow, secure the affected corridor and coordinate rescue and recovery operations alongside security agencies and other emergency responders.
The agency further confirmed that the driver of the articulated truck was apprehended at the scene by LASTMA personnel and subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for investigation and possible prosecution.
Recovery operations commenced immediately as a tow truck was deployed to evacuate the overturned articulated vehicle and the damaged mini bus from the scene, while officers from the Orile-Iganmu Police Division began documentation and preliminary investigations into the incident.
Despite the severity of the accident and the extensive damage recorded within the vicinity, vehicular movement around the corridor remained largely stable due to prompt traffic management interventions by LASTMA officials.
Reacting to the development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, renewed the agency’s call on truck operators, fleet managers and logistics companies to ensure strict mechanical inspections of heavy-duty vehicles before deployment on Lagos roads.
Bakare-Oki stressed that poor vehicle maintenance, especially faulty braking systems and compromised safety mechanisms, continues to pose significant threats to lives, public infrastructure and road safety administration across the state.

He urged transport operators and stakeholders to comply strictly with established safety regulations and operational standards to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
The statement was signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA.
