… NGIC isolates affected segment in Eleme as authorities assess injuries, environmental impact

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has confirmed that an explosion occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, on a gas pipeline belonging to its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
In a statement issued on October 16, Mr. Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPC Limited stated that NNPC Ltd expressed deep concern over reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses in the community.
“Our thoughts are with those affected and their families. Protecting lives and preventing further harm are our immediate priorities,” the Company said.
Emergency Response Activated
According to the statement, NGIC has activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected pipeline segment to limit further impact.
The subsidiary is working in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate the response and assess the impact on people, property and the environment.
NNPC Ltd added that it is engaging the host community leadership to understand immediate needs and coordinate appropriate support for those affected.
Cause Under Investigation
The cause of the incident and the full extent of its impact are currently being assessed.
“NNPC Limited remains committed to the safe and reliable operation of its assets. Relevant operational information, including previous reports and actions taken, will be reviewed to support a clear understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident. We will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities to establish the facts and determine appropriate corrective measures,” the statement added.
Safety Advisory
Residents and members of the public have been urged to keep clear of the affected area and follow safety instructions from emergency responders and relevant authorities.
NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of its host communities, environmental protection and the responsible operation of its facilities, promising to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
Why It Matters
Pipeline explosions in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region have historically been catastrophic, often resulting in significant loss of life, displacement of communities, and severe environmental degradation. The incident at Aleto, Eleme, an industrial and densely populated hub in Rivers State highlights the persistent risks associated with aging infrastructure and the transportation of highly volatile energy products near residential areas.
The swift isolation of the pipeline segment by NGIC is a crucial first step in mitigating secondary explosions and halting the spread of fire or gas leaks. However, the true test of NNPC’s response will lie in the transparency of its investigation and the adequacy of its compensation and support for the affected community.
In recent years, pipeline incidents have been attributed to a mix of factors: equipment failure, sabotage, and illegal refining activities. The Company’s promise to review “relevant operational information, including previous reports,” is significant. It signals an acknowledgment that if prior warnings or maintenance issues were flagged and ignored, accountability must follow.
For the residents of Eleme, this is a moment of profound anxiety. The immediate priority must be the safety of lives and property. But moving forward, NNPC and its regulators must ensure that host communities are not left to bear the brunt of infrastructural failures. A comprehensive, independent investigation into the cause of this explosion is not just a regulatory requirement; it is a moral imperative to prevent a recurrence.
