The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders on Tuesday successfully extricated two victims who sustained severe burns after a diesel-laden tanker plunged from the Otedola Bridge and erupted into a ferocious inferno beneath the bridge.

The terrifying conflagration left the two victims with extensive and severe burn injuries, necessitating their immediate extrication from the danger zone and urgent medical intervention.

Swift Rescue Operations

In a demonstration of operational dexterity, LASTMA’s emergency response team, in concert with other relevant emergency management agencies, swiftly mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued the two severely burnt victims from the perilous situation.

The injured victims were subsequently evacuated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s Rescue Unit (LRU) to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre, Toll-Gate, where they were admitted for immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were engaged in concerted firefighting operations to contain and extinguish the raging inferno, prevent its further escalation and avert additional casualties, as well as potential damage to surrounding infrastructure.

Inter-Agency Synergy

Other emergency and security agencies that participated in the coordinated rescue and containment operations included: Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s Rescue Unit (LRU), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (Neighbourhood Watch)

Police personnel from the Alausa Police Division

The collective intervention of these agencies exemplified the indispensable significance of inter-agency synergy, operational coordination and rapid emergency mobilisation in managing high-risk incidents.

LASTMA GM Commends Responders

Commending the promptness, professionalism and commendable sense of duty demonstrated by the responding agencies, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, lauded the concerted efforts of all emergency responders whose timely intervention facilitated the rescue and evacuation of the injured victims.

The General Manager expressed his heartfelt wishes for the swift and complete recovery of the two victims, reiterating the paramount importance of rapid emergency response, institutional collaboration and unwavering dedication to the preservation of human lives.

Safety Warning to Articulated Vehicle Operators

LASTMA reiterated its steadfast commitment to the enforcement of traffic regulations, efficient traffic management, prompt incident response and the strategic coordination of emergency operations across Lagos State.

The Authority consequently urged motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, to prioritise regular mechanical inspections, strict adherence to prescribed safety standards and responsible driving practices to minimise the occurrence of preventable road traffic disasters.

Why It Matters

The Otedola Bridge corridor has become synonymous with tragic tanker accidents in Lagos. The plunging of a diesel tanker from the bridge and the resulting inferno is a chilling reminder of the persistent dangers posed by heavy-duty vehicles on Lagos roads, a danger that frequently threatens lives, property, and critical infrastructure.

While the swift response of LASTMA, the LRU, Fire Service, FRSC, and the Police prevented the incident from escalating into an even larger catastrophe, the fact remains that two individuals suffered severe burns. This underscores a grim reality: the margin between survival and tragedy in these incidents is often razor-thin, and it is deeply dependent on the rapid mobilisation of emergency responders.

The General Manager’s appeal for mechanical inspections is not just a routine warning; it is a matter of life and death. The frequency with which articulated vehicles experience brake failures or lose control on Lagos bridges raises serious questions about the enforcement of roadworthiness standards.

Lagos State’s emergency responders deserve commendation for their continued operational synergy. However, the ultimate solution lies in prevention. Until strict penalties are enforced against operators of unroadworthy heavy-duty vehicles, the Otedola Bridge and other critical transport corridors will remain vulnerable to avoidable disasters.
