Union Bank of Nigeria has been recognised with the 2025 Best SME Growth Banking Initiatives Award at the Nigeria National SME Business Awards, organised by the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria in collaboration with the Lagos State Government’s Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment.

The award reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s banking landscape, where performance is increasingly measured not by product range or balance sheet size, but by how effectively financial institutions support the day-to-day realities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

A Shift from Scale to Practical Impact

For many Nigerian SMEs, success has evolved beyond expansion metrics to include operational stability reliable cash flow, seamless payments, and timely access to financing. Within this context, ASBON’s evaluation framework focuses on practical outcomes: which banks are genuinely reducing friction for entrepreneurs.

Union Bank’s recognition signals alignment with this changing expectation. Its SME strategy over the past year has centred on improving usability, speed, and accessibility across core banking touchpoints.

Digital Onboarding and Multi-Channel Banking

A key pillar of the bank’s SME proposition is the enhancement of its digital infrastructure, particularly the Union360 platform and a Straight-Through-Processing (STP) onboarding system. These upgrades are aimed at reducing account opening timelines and enabling businesses to begin transacting with minimal delay.

This is particularly relevant in Nigeria’s increasingly multi-channel payment environment, where SMEs routinely operate across bank transfers, POS systems, mobile money, and online platforms. Reliability across these channels has become a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator.

Rethinking SME Credit Assessment

Access to finance remains a structural constraint for SMEs, especially those lacking formal collateral or extensive financial documentation. Union Bank’s approach has been to expand the criteria used in credit evaluation, placing greater emphasis on transaction history, cash flow patterns, and active account usage.

This shift acknowledges the operational realities of many Nigerian businesses, where financial activity is robust but formal records may be limited. Lending during the review period focused on working capital, inventory financing, and incremental expansion areas critical to business continuity and growth.

Human Engagement Still Matters

Despite advances in digital banking, Union Bank has maintained a strong human interface through relationship managers, sales teams, and branch networks nationwide. Its “Adopt, Engage and Grow” campaign underscores a relationship-driven model that prioritises continuous engagement over episodic outreach.

This hybrid approach reflects the pressures faced by SMEs, where timely support and contextual understanding often determine business outcomes.

Partnership with ASBON and Behavioural Impact

Union Bank’s collaboration with ASBON extends beyond the award itself. Through the SME Empowerment Challenge, both organisations encouraged entrepreneurs to formalise their operations maintaining transaction records, separating personal and business finances, and developing structured growth plans.

While positioned as a campaign, the initiative addresses a foundational issue in Nigeria’s SME ecosystem: financial discipline. This capability underpins access to credit, grants, and partnerships, making it a critical enabler of long-term business viability.

Beyond Recognition

Rather than serving as a culmination, the ASBON award highlights an ongoing transition in SME banking. As Nigerian small businesses continue to navigate a challenging economic environment, institutions that prioritise operational efficiency, accessible financing, and ecosystem collaboration are likely to play a more consequential role.

For Union Bank, the recognition points less to a single achievement and more to a strategic direction one that aligns banking services with the functional needs of the real economy.
