The Lagos State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer and two other individuals in a fatal road accident that occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the Badagry Roundabout inward Seme.

The devastating incident, involving a truck owned by the Dangote Group, has sent shockwaves across the Badagry axis and drawn renewed attention to the risks faced by traffic officials and road users.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fully loaded SHACMAN truck suffered brake failure while moving at high speed, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle rammed into a LASTMA officer who was on duty regulating traffic, as well as a pedestrian at the roundabout. The truck reportedly continued its course, fatally striking another individual before coming to a halt about 200 metres from the initial impact point.

The driver fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended by LASTMA personnel and subsequently handed over to the police.

Emergency responders, including officials of LASTMA, the Badagry Police Division, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and concerned residents, were promptly mobilised. The victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Badagry, where they were confirmed dead.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, describing the loss as tragic and deeply painful.

He paid tribute to the fallen officer, noting that he died in active service while ensuring road safety and order.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy. The officer paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, demonstrating courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to public service,” Bakare-Oki said.

He also stressed the urgent need for transport operators to uphold strict vehicle maintenance standards, particularly with regard to braking systems, to prevent avoidable accidents.

“This incident underscores the grave consequences of mechanical failure. We urge all haulage and logistics operators to prioritise routine safety checks to safeguard lives,” he added.

Authorities confirmed that the accident vehicle has been impounded and handed over to the Badagry Police Division for comprehensive investigation.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and strengthening road safety enforcement across the state. It also pledged to enhance monitoring mechanisms, improve emergency response systems, and intensify public awareness campaigns.

The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the shared responsibility required to ensure safety on Lagos roads.
