Sahara Power Enterprise Group (SPEG), Africa’s largest privately held power business, has commenced construction of a $12 million, 12-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant (IPP) at the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric Plc in Lagos .
The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of work on a six-unit facility, each with 2MW capacity, designed to improve electricity reliability across one of Lagos’ most critical commercial and industrial corridors. The project is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027.

Upon completion, the plant will serve: Industrial clusters, Commercial centres, Residential communities, Public institutions across Ogba, Acme Road, Wemco Road, and surrounding areas.
Leadership Comments
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Enterprise Group, described the project as a bold statement of intent for Nigeria’s energy future.
“This initiative is about much more than breaking ground for a new power plant. It represents a bold commitment to Nigeria’s energy future and our determination to deliver dependable, efficient, and sustainable electricity to businesses and communities. Improving the availability and reliability of power will enhance productivity, growth, and value creation.”
He commended the Federal Government, Lagos State Government, Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Ikeja Electric, and Cummins for their support .
Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ikeja Electric Plc, described the project as a strategic investment that strengthens service reliability for customers.
“At Ikeja Electric, our priority is to partner with forward-looking investors and developers such as SPEG to deliver innovative solutions that improve customer experience and reliable electricity supply across our network.”
Construction and Community Support
Cummins West Africa Limited will handle the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) scope. Mark Oni-Okeke, Managing Director of Cummins West Africa, expressed delight at partnering with Sahara Power to “accelerate sustainable socio-economic development reliably and sustainably”.
Local leaders welcomed the investment. Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, said the project would stimulate business development and create employment opportunities.
His Royal Majesty Oba Egbeyemi Lateef Oladimeji, Ologba of Ogbaland, pledged the community’s full support.
Strategic Context
The project is part of a growing wave of private investment in embedded power plants as Nigeria works to close the persistent gap between electricity demand and supply, a shortfall that has long constrained manufacturing output and business costs in Africa’s largest economy.
Sahara Power Group, a subsidiary of Sahara Group, operates the largest privately owned power business in Sub-Saharan Africa, with affiliates including Egbin Power Plc and Ikeja Electric. The company was recently named to the Mission 300 Private Sector Council, a World Bank Group and African Development Bank initiative to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.
