The custodian of Erinmo Ijesaland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. Michael Odunayo Ajayi, Arowotawaya II, Elerinmo of Erinmo Ijesaland, Indigenes (Home and Diaspora) and residents of the ancient town has celebrated the New Yam Festival 2022.

The New Yam Festival held on Saturday 23rd July 2022 hosted many dignitaries, homes, diaspora, and groups of farmers in Erinmo Ijesaland in Osun State.

The New Yam Festival signifies an important way of marking the beginning of food and end of the farming season in Erinmo Ijesaland. It is a celebration of life, accomplishments in the community, culture and well-being.

Erinmo is an ancient town located in the Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State. The New Yam Festival in Erinmo is always marked with pomp and pageantry. The occasion of the New Yam festival is a cultural feast with its deep significance. The indigenes and residents agog in communities with the company of subsistence agricultural population groups to mark the eating of new yam.

The festival was symbolic of enjoyment after the cultivation season. New Yam Festival culture is momentous with hoe-knife life to manage the planting and tending of tuberous requirements. Yam farmers in Erinmo hold this festival in high esteem.

New Yam Festival was observed in Erinmo as a public function on that appointed day. It is the feast of new yam; the breaking of the yam; and harvest is followed by thanksgiving. An offering was put forward and the people pray for renewed life as they eat the new yam. An offering is made to the spirits of the field with special reference to the presiding deity of the yam crop.
